Union-News, Monday, September 30, 2002 C6 ARTS ENTERTAINMENT Mann: Singer walks independent path Continued from Page C5 "Bachelor No. which became her third solo album, but the first she did without major label support. The album received critical ac.claim and soid enough to allow her continue down the independent path. She's hoping that her new CD "Lost in Space" will bring simi-lar, or even better, results. So far she is happy with the record's sales.

"I don't feel any pressure to meet any expectations," she said. "You just want to make enough money to pay for the next record." Mann's criticism of and battles with major labels in the early -1990s foreshadowed the current 'movement for more artistic control and financial freedom for musicians. Several artists, most notably Wilco. have received paeans from the press for shunning major labels and succeeding on their own. But Mann was among the first to to extricate herself from what artists perceive as no-win contracts that labels force on them.

While Mann's control of her career has shifted. her music remains unchanged. Solid melodies and clever lyrics populate "Lost in Space." Yet it carves out a differtent sonic space than her previous works. Mann said that "Whatever" (her first solo release in 1993) was heavily influenced by music of the '60s, while 1995's "I'm with Stupid" was colored by the sound of bands such as the Posies and the Loud Family. She calls 2000's "Bachelor No.

2" a "Burt Bachrach-y" But the recorded of "Lost in Space" is more influenced by the subject matter of the songs, as opposed to. other artists' music, she said. "I wanted to reflect that '2001- A Space Odyssey' feel where the guy is floating in space," she said. "It's a peaceful feeling but also one of loneliness and isolation. I didn't do it consciously, but that theme developed as I was writing it.

The best and most interesting songs had that in them." One song about this state is "Guys Like Me" where Mann assumes a stereotypical male perspective of emotional ambivalence and detachment. "I have a couple of friends who are really detached," she said. "It's hard for some guys to realize that women aren't a separate species and that we pretty much feel the same way they do. I feel detached sometimes, too. and all that 'Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus' stuff is so enraging." But one topic that seemed to be coyly veiled in many of Mann's previous efforts the evils of major record labels is absent on "Lost in Space," she said.

She claimed that the topic is "no longer on my mind." But she also feels the tide is turning in favor of artists. "The stigma of speaking out about labels is gone," she said. "People have a more realistic viewpoint and instead of just saying 'Oh you're a rock star, you're life is perfect' they see us as workers dealing with these giant Tenor: Pavarotti charms audience in Hartford Continued from Page C5 on your tunic and powder your face. And despite pleas, he didn't return for an encore. When Chuck is done, Chuck is gone and he was out of the building and on the road before they got the Calvin's house lights on. But while on stage, he showed absolutely no signs of slowing down. This 75-year-old played with the spunk and fire of performers half his age. Decked out in a white admiral's hat.

sparkling silver string tie, white shirt and black pants, he was doing hip thrusts while walking along the side of the stage in "Memphis, Tennessee." shaking his legs during "Sweet Little Sixteen" and getting down for his famous duck walk during "Johnny B. He played bits of the blues Hurts Me Too" and "Mean Old before breaking into the rockin' "Around and Around." even catching NRBQ briefly off guard. He followed that with a raw "School Day" while the sellout crowd joined in heartily on the chorus "Hail! Hail! Rock 'n' Roll." Even as he's approaching his 80s, it still seems like it's always prime time for one of rock 'n' roll's the most fabled figures. Elvis had voice.

Buddy Holly had the songs and The Everly Brothers had the harmonies. But with his gritty guitar style, Chuck Berry was the poet who melded blues and country to give rock 'n' roll the jumpstart it needed.
